One of my favourite websites is TED which has videos of the world's most amazing and entertaining speakers.
The video I've selected for today is Daniel Goleman: Why Aren't We All Good Samaritans? .
Daniel Goleman is famous for writing the books, Emotional Intelligence, Working With Emotional Intelligence, and more recently Social Intelligence - all of which are standard coaching texts.
I tend to find videos that will promote conversation. This video is only 13 minutes long and I believe you'll find to be very interesting.
Coaching Exercises
1. Daniel mentions that we're all born with empathy, however we choose to turn it off for any number of reasons. What does empathy mean to you? Do you have any conditions around when you are empathetic and when you are not?
2. Daniel also shares with us examples of commercial empathy, where the choice of a product's development takes into consideration an empathetic view of the people and things the production of that product will impact. Do you ever consider the impact on others when you purchase a product or service?
3. Finally, Daniel shared a story at the end of the video about "not noticing" others. How do you typically respond in similar situations?
As always, if you need any support with, or as a result of this exercise please consider www.askacoach.com for email and/or phone coaching.
All the best,
Noel
