One of the things I was taught when a teenager was about writing to local politicians with questions and comments, so that I could learn more about government and also be more active and engaged in conversations and debates regarding public policy, laws, the environment, etc.
To this day, I still routinely write letters to various government officials including the Prime Minister of Australia. I'm pleased to report that I've received responses to every single inquiry, although most were responded to by the aides of the government official.
I may not always agree with the responses received, but I enjoy receiving it, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to engage at that level.
So, I'm curious what you would write about and to whom.
Coaching Exercises
1. Who would you write to in local government and what would the topic be, including any questions you may ask or solutions you'd propose?
2. What about at a state, province or territory level?
3. What about at a federal level?
4. What about to the United Nations or some similar international body?
5. In all of the above how would you ensure that your message was written in a fair and professional way to increase the chance that it will be received well and responded to in kind?
6. In all of the above what compliment or acknowledgement of the government's efforts could you provide so that they also feel that there is some recognition for the work they do, even if you don't fully agree with the quality of their work?
7. In all of the above how would you offer solutions and suggestions in a considered manner?
8. What are you committing to?
