Of course you are. I believe all of us are good people or at least have the potential to be.
However there are certainly times when we observe behaviour exhibited by someone else (or ourselves) and we think, "a good person wouldn't do that."
Yes, this is all very subjective. And also an interesting topic for today's blog in my opinion.
This isn't necessarily one of my soapbox moments about other people. When selecting this topic for today I'm also thinking about myself, my own behaviour and how others may perceive me as either a "good" or a "bad" person.
We also need to be clear about generalisations. For example, just because someone may have done one behaviour that is perceived as "bad" by others doesn't then mean that the person themselves is "bad."
So, I find it intriguing to be able to separate behaviour from person; to look at once-off events and trends; to consider values, beliefs, attitudes, choices and the resulting actions and reactions.
I could go on and on about his, however I suspect that some of the questions below will be enough and helpful on their own to get the thoughts rolling in on this topic.
Enjoy good people!
Coaching Exercises
1. What makes a person "good"? Be specific, make lists, write in your journal...do whatever is going to work for you to really explore this simple, open question.
2. What makes a person "bad"? Be specific, make lists, write in your journal...do whatever is going to work for you to really explore this simple, open question.
3. What specifically makes you a good person? What behaviours do you do on a regular basis that quantifies / qualifies your "goodness"? Similarly, what behaviours occur from time to time (or more often) which are contrary to what you believe is "good". What's happening in those situations compared to those situations when you're being "good"?
4. As a result of these questions and your considered responses to them, what are you committing to?
As always, if you need any further personal support in response to any of these coaching exercises, please consider using the askacoach.com service.
