Welcome to the first day of 2009!
Also, welcome to the beginning of all you'll achieve this year.
One of my favourite quotes is "Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail". This is an incredibly important quote today of all days.
Why?
Any chance you made any New Year's resolutions last night over a glass of champagne or two?
Well, quite a few people make some very well intentioned goal statements at this time of year but in a very short time afterward realise they've already lost grown.
This is because of the lack of planning.
Goals are achieved when they're planned, not just when they're talked about.
So this year, start it off right by creating your plan!
Coaching Exercises
1. Remember/Review what you wrote in response to yesterday's blog.
2. What goals are you setting for 2009?
3. Create your plan for each goal separately. Use the following guideline to help you:
- Write a goal statement that's SMART (specific - measurable - attractive and attainable - realistic and relevant - time bound)
- Link the goal to your values
- List the benefits to you and/or others if you achieve the goal (this is your inspiration)
- List the consequences you want to avoid if you were to fail (this is your motivation)
- List the resources (including people) you will access to achieve your goal
- List the obstacles you think may be in the way of your achievement
- Create two solutions for each obstacle now so that you're prepared if they happen or possibly to avoid them altogether
- Create the list of steps you'll take in order with the first step required to be taken in the next 24 hours!
- List the milestones along the way to achievement and how you want to celebrate those milestones when you reach them
- Design your celebration strategy now for when you accomplish your goal
4. As a result of these questions and your personal exploration and answers, what are you committing to?
As always, if you need any further personal support in response to any of these coaching exercises, please consider using the askacoach.com service.
All the best,
Noel
